Production, distribution and exhibition

The making of a film (or steps of production) will usually involve the main process' outlined in brief below.

The idea Someone finds inspiration to think of a rough story and plot, then discusses the ideas with other people and the producer. They will also discus rough costs for the film.
Developing finance    The film ideas are pitched then a grant application is made to secure funding for production.
Script development A synopsis of the film has to be made as well as a draft to send off to get financing, a final draft can then be made.
Packaging Rough decisions are made as to what actors could fit the roles.
Financing Contracts for the film are drawn up and deals are sealed for financing / investment.
Pre-production Cast and crew are all hired and detailed shot preparations are made.
The shoot The shooting begins! In doing so the production team must try to meet deadlines and schedules so footage can be edited as soon as possible.
Post production This starts during the shooting, as soon as there is raw footage to be used. Rough cut is made, footage is edited with sound, special effects and titles.
Sales Producer must find a distributor to later market the film and put it on the shelves. A trailer is made and released.
Marketing As finishing touches are made, the film is marketed with media coverage and advertising to soon be screened in cinemas.
Exhibition The film is finally premiered and released.
